A woman in a five-year relationship sought advice from the online community after a tense dispute with her fiancé.
The disagreement arose from financial issues, leading her to reevaluate the dynamics of their relationship.
In a candid post on Reddit’s Am I the Asshole forum, she recounted her ordeal.
The 32-year-old woman, identified as Original Poster (OP), shared that she accepted a proposal from her 35-year-old partner after five years together. They had planned their wedding for May 2025.
After the engagement, tragedy struck as OP’s grandmother passed away.
Describing her grandparents as “highly successful” with lucrative careers, OP inherited a substantial sum after their demise. And that’s when the trouble started…
“Upon hearing the news, I informed my fiancé. His reaction was overly enthusiastic, more than I had anticipated. I didn’t pay much heed until later when I overheard him joking with his friends about using the money to clear his credit card debt and fund a ‘boys’ trip we had planned,” OP recounted.
Confronting him, she discovered his assumption that the windfall was for joint use. Indignant, she rebuked him for contemplating using the inheritance without her consent.
“‘This money is not yours to spend. It was bequeathed to me by MY grandmother, and you have no claim to it,’” she asserted.
Exasperated, she left the room after a heated exchange. Her fiancé pursued her, accusing her of becoming a financial burden in their impending marriage. He insisted that any money she received automatically belonged to him too. He also criticized her for embarrassing him in front of his friends and dashing their holiday hopes.
Feeling upset, OP departed silently to stay with a friend, concluding her post by questioning if she was at fault.
The woman received overwhelming support and validation from fellow online users following her post.
