Animal cruelty is unacceptable, unforgivable, and anyone who allows it is inhumane. Unfortunately, animals are still often abused. Some animals haven’t even had a chance at a decent life.
Take Winston the dog, for example.
Last December, photographer Wesley White went on a trip to Belize in South America to work and relax.
The small country offers beautiful nature and was a paradise for photographer Wesley.
But not everything was peace and quiet.
Tragic Discovery
Wesley went kayaking and was looking for a nice spot to have a picnic along the way. He landed with his kayak on a deserted beach just outside Belize.
He was completely alone on this paradise island. Or at least, that’s what he thought…
On a dock at the island’s harbor was a dog. A severely emaciated dog who appeared completely malnourished and seemed to be dying. Wesley could count all his bones.
It was clear that the dog was likely on his last legs. If he was alone, at least.
When the dog saw Wesley approaching, he started wagging his tail.
“My heart broke. He was hoping for a miracle until someone would come to help, and that turned out to be me,” he told Animal Channel.
Wesley knew he couldn’t leave the dog alone on the island. So, the photographer took the dog with him on his kayak.
The man was determined not to leave the country until he knew the dog would be taken care of. He named him Winston.
Once the kayak reached the mainland, Wesley contacted the appropriate authorities and Winston could receive care.
“The dog had several severe infections and was completely dehydrated. Other than that, he was in good condition,” Wesley writes on Instagram.
Wesley spent his last two days in Belize by Winston’s side, to accompany him. When it was time to return to his home in Indiana, USA, he was sad to leave the dog behind.
“It was like leaving my buddy,” Wesley says.
Back home in the US, Wesley couldn’t stop thinking about his dear friend Winston. He even wondered if it was possible to adopt the dog, but he already had two dogs and wasn’t sure if it would work.
Two months later, Wesley still thought about Winston. But now he had made a decision.
He decided to adopt the dog, so he contacted the government in Belize and began the process. Once all the paperwork was in order, he could finally reunite with Winston.
Wesley flew to Texas to meet his old friend, and look at the reaction. Extraordinary. What a heartwarming reunion!
So now Winston lives with his guardian angel Wesley. In their home in Montana, Winston can play with the other dogs, no more life of misery. Just love!
