Vegetables and fruits offer a wide range of health benefits, and we all know this. But how many hidden possibilities are actually hiding in your fridge?

There are so many everyday pieces of fruit and vegetables that have long been used for their medicinal properties. Not all of them taste good, but overall, they are the way to keep people away from doctors.

One of these gifts from Mother Earth is the onion, often taken for granted.

Of course, we use onions all over the world, in a multitude of dishes, but did you know that they also have some benefits when it comes to improving your health?

Onion as Medicine

Various studies have shown that onions are good for the heart. The odor they emit contains the substance hydrogen sulfide, known for its positive effects on blood vessels.

Furthermore, onions – especially those of the red variety – are full of antioxidants. These are crucial when it comes to keeping your body in balance and keeping your immune system as strong as possible.

Already in medieval times, onion bulbs were hung outside the doors of houses, in the hope that they would absorb the plague spores and thus protect the residents of the house.

Today, of course, we know better, but that doesn’t mean that onions can’t be very useful when it comes to making homemade medicines.

Onions vs. Cough

Let’s be honest, we live in a time where colds and flu viruses can spread faster than ever. If you’re dealing with a cough, one onion may be enough to get rid of the problem.

What to Do:

  1. Place half an onion in a bowl (some people chop it finely).
  2. Pour boiling water over the onion (make sure you don’t completely drown it) and place the bowl on a bedside table or under the bed.
  3. Go to sleep. The room might smell like onions the next morning, but it’s worth it. Apparently, your cough should disappear by the time you wake up.

Cheap, Harmless, and Natural

I prefer solutions that are cheap and natural. For me, it became very expensive, constantly buying cough medicine or tablets from a pharmacy.

To anyone skeptical of the above method, wondering if it really works, what’s the harm in trying it out? You have nothing to lose (except for a few hours of a slightly smelly room). It’s easy, cheap, and harmless to your body.
