As parents, we want nothing more than for our children to grow up happy and, above all, safe.
We use our own experience and wisdom to ensure that our babies are never in danger. The idea of our little ones suffering is too terrible to think about.
Unfortunately, growing up comes with a natural curiosity, which sometimes leads children to play with things they shouldn’t or end up in dangerous situations. As a result, some children end up injured or, in extremely tragic cases, worse.
No matter how hard we try, we cannot protect our children from everything, as evidenced by this sad story.
Accidental death
A two-year-old boy from Cornwall, U.K., died after accidentally hanging himself on the cord of a roller blind, according to the Daily Mirror.
An investigation revealed that toddler Cobie Grimshaw was playing on April 4 when he got entangled in a bead string hanging at the window near the sofa.
The 26-year-old mother, Lauren Grimshaw, found her son minutes later, but the damage was already done – Cobie had suffered severe brain damage from lack of oxygen. He died three days later, on April 7.

“He was a loving boy”
“I would like to add that he was a happy, loving boy who was loved by everyone,” Lauren said after the investigation into her son’s death.
“He was the boss at Southwest Inflatable Theme Parks and everyone listened to him.”
“He had just started kindergarten and made lots of friends there.”
“He was my only child and was my sunshine every day.”
Regarding the incident that cost her son’s life, Lauren described how she walked into the living room and saw Cobie standing upright on the sofa near the window.
“I remember thinking he seemed to be asleep, but as I approached, I saw the cord around his neck,” she explained.
“I immediately removed him from the cord by lifting him up and taking it off his neck as I called for mom and Tom (her partner).”

Help was not enough
“Mom took Cobie. I screamed for help. Mom laid him on the couch and started CPR while I called the emergency number for an ambulance.”
Cobie was flown to the hospital by air ambulance, but could not be saved.
“I was told his brain was swollen and he was unlikely to make it,” Lauren said.
“He was kept on life support until April 7, when he passed away.”
“I am shattered by Cobie’s death and miss him every day.”
“I just want everything to be back to how it was.”
According to coroner Andrew Cox, the cause of Cobie’s death was a global brain injury due to suffocation.
Sofa as a trampoline
“Cobie was a normal, fit and healthy two-year-old boy,” he said. “Busy with everything, obviously used to climbing on the sofa and using it as a trampoline.”
“On this morning, he was doing what two-year-old boys do, but tragically, as he climbed on the back of the sofa, he got stuck in the cords, which were not attached to the wall, and he accidentally got entangled and strangled himself.”
Stories like this truly break my heart. No one is to blame, but a two-year-old boy with his whole life ahead of him has gone from the world under such unnecessary circumstances.
I can only imagine the grief and fear of Lauren and her family. Rest in peace, Cobie.
Lord, wrap your loving arms around Cobie’s loved ones and protect them from continued torment in this difficult time.
Rest in peace, Cobie!
