Tessie and John Sylvester’s Story
Tessie and John Sylvester, known as “Sly” to their friends, met at a football camp in 2001. Their connection was evident from the start, with shared interests in football, family, and faith. They soon got married, had two sons, and enjoyed wonderful years together. However, dark clouds loomed on the horizon.
In 2010, John, a former football player, was diagnosed with ALS. Despite Tessie’s devoted care, his health deteriorated over 7 years. Tessie had to work to support the family, as John’s condition prevented him from working.
On June 6, 2017, John knew his time was near. Just before Tessie could call the funeral home after his passing, she received devastating news—an advanced cancer diagnosis. This news marked the beginning of a new battle for Tessie.

With adenocarcinoma spreading to her liver and lymph nodes, Tessie faced a tough road ahead. Determined to survive for her sons, she embarked on chemotherapy. The burden of treatments prevented her from working, leading to a fundraising campaign by friends to support the family.
Despite the hardships, Tessie’s resilient spirit shines through. She faces the challenges with optimism, echoing the positive attitude her late husband always had. Tessie’s unwavering determination to fight against the odds continues as she battles cancer.
Despite the adversity, Tessie remains hopeful with the support of friends and prayers. Tessie’s strength and courage in the face of adversity serve as an inspiration to all.
