If you have children, chances are you have a trampoline in the backyard. It can be fun, but safety is also important to consider.
Trampolines can be dangerous. It is estimated that there are 100,000 cases of accidents caused by trampolines each year.
Jamie Quinlan, a 12-year-old boy from England, was playing on the trampoline with some friends last week. The boy told SWNS that he wanted to jump at the same time as all his friends.
He admitted that it was a “stupid idea,” and what happened next, nobody could have predicted.
“I suddenly felt a very strange feeling in my back,” he says. “It turned out to be a spring.”

The large metal spring had sprung out of the trampoline at 70 kilometers per hour and pierced the boy’s back about 6 centimeters deep. This was reported by the website Louth Leader.
Jamie’s friends watched in shock as their playmate suffered serious pain. His parents took him to the hospital and he was immediately transferred to a children’s ward.
“While I was in the waiting room, I was very nervous,” Jamie said. “It only took 10 minutes to remove the spring from my back.”
The boy is currently recovering from his wound. “Sometimes it feels like the spring is still in my back, but I feel better and better every day,” Jamie says. “I’m relieved it didn’t get worse.”
He is right, because the spring missed his spine by a hair’s breadth, and at that speed it could have been fatal.
“The spring shot out of the trampoline like a bullet,” Jamie’s father Ian said. “If Jamie had been hit elsewhere, in his neck or head, he would have been dead.”
“It’s a terrible event, and it scared me to death. It can happen to anyone. Jamie was very brave.”

Jamie says that the doctors had never seen anything like it, but his father still warns against the dangers of trampolines. The next victim may not be as lucky.
“I want people to be aware of how dangerous trampolines can be if the springs are not covered or if there is a hole,” he says.
I have seen a spring fly out of a trampoline myself. We saw it fly over the house.
In America, there are thousands of incidents every year where people are injured by these trampolines.
