About five months ago, Missouri Wildlife posted a viral Facebook post challenging people to spot something in the dried foliage.
Watch Your Step
The post titled “This is why you need to watch your step in the forest,” confused users, with some suggesting it was an optical illusion.
Followers, seeking help to identify the mysterious object, commented on the post, expressing their thoughts and confusion.
In response, Missouri Wildlife shared another photo, pointing out the well-camouflaged snakes. This revelation surprised many viewers.
Copperheads
Hidden among the brown ground leaves is a venomous copperhead snake, commonly found in North America.
These snakes have distinctive copper-colored heads and bodies covered in pale or pinkish-brown skin with hourglass markings.
Copperheads, though less harmful than some snakes, possess venom with hemotoxins that can cause temporary damage such as muscle tissue destruction, circulation issues, and breathing difficulties if bitten. While their bites are usually not fatal and are used as a warning or defense mechanism, their sharp fangs can cause significant skin damage.
With proper treatment, snakebites are typically curable.
Statistics indicate that out of the 7,000 to 8,000 snakebites in the US annually, around 2,920 are caused by copperheads.
Champions in Camouflage
Copperheads, unlike many snakes that flee when threatened, stay still and blend into their surroundings, showcasing an impressive yet risky skill.
They camouflage so effectively that predators, including humans and pets, struggle to notice them. If approached too closely, the snake will strike.
Recently, a dog owner in Fairfax, Virginia, contacted K2C Wildlife Encounters after discovering three camouflaged copperheads in the grass.
Where’s Waldo?
Upon arrival, animal rescuers managed to locate the hidden snakes. They later initiated a ‘spot the snake’ challenge, presenting two images for viewers to decipher.
The first image features what appears to be green grass, prompting a playful comparison to the game Where’s Waldo.
The second image displays a red bucket housing three copperheads.
K2C Wildlife Encounters humorously remarked on the snakes’ disappearing act in their Facebook post.
Bonnie Keller, co-founder of K2C Wildlife Encounters, highlights the misconceptions around snakes and emphasizes the importance of educating oneself about local snake species.
