Animal rights advocates are raising concerns over the resurgence of polar bear hunting.
Trophy hunters are traveling to the North Pole in Canada to hunt polar bears, proudly displaying photos with the animals they have heartlessly shot down.
Recent reports from The Mirror suggest that up to 5000 polar bears have been killed in recent years by trophy hunters.
These hunting expeditions primarily target clientele from the UK, US, and China, with The Mirror noting that at least 17 polar bear trophies have been illegally brought into the UK.
Eduardo Gonçalves voices his concerns, stating, “Polar bears are facing a severe threat of extinction due to climate change. It is imperative that we halt these cruel hunting practices immediately” through a campaign against trophy hunting.
The organization is actively pushing for a ban on all hunting trophy imports.
Cost of Hunting
The cost of hunting a polar bear stands at around 40,000 euros.
Organizations offering these hunts promise successful hunters the opportunity to take their polar bear trophies home, complete with the animal’s skin.
If unsuccessful within the initial 12 days, hunters may extend their expedition for an additional 10 days.
Polar Bears in Peril
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), polar bears are under constant threat from factors like climate change, diseases, and a dwindling food supply in their habitat.
Expressing his dismay, Eduardo Gonçalves tells The Mirror, “We must prevent the disturbing trend of polar bears being hunted for sport, only to end up as a mere trophy or fireplace ornament.”
Call for Ban on Trophy Hunting
A petition is underway advocating for a complete prohibition on polar bear hunting. With 7000 signatures already gathered, the petition aims to be delivered to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
What are your thoughts? Should the trophy hunting of polar bears be outlawed?
