A video went viral on social media featuring a fish resembling a zombie, completely dried up and disintegrating at the touch.
Out of the blue, the person filming took a bottle of water and poured a little on the fish’s mouth. Surprisingly, the fish immediately revived! This fish is called the plecostomus, commonly known as a pleco. It possesses a unique ability to enter a hibernation-like state.
The plecostomus fish can survive for months buried under dried, hardened mud! It has adapted to endure these conditions until the rain returns.
In contrast to most fish, plecos can live up to 30 hours out of water if they have enough stored oxygen.
This species possesses remarkable versatility; the air-breathing freshwater plecostomus can weigh up to three pounds and uses an additional breathing organ in its gill cavity to aid in respiration.
These fish have gills for underwater breathing and can swim to the water’s surface to access air when the oxygen levels are sufficient.
The air-breathing freshwater plecostomus, also known as an algae eater, originates from northern South America. It derives its name from its mouth’s sucker-like appearance. However, plecos are not the only fish species that breathe air.
