Zoo Staff Refuses to Save Drowning Chimpanzee – Truck Driver Throws Rules Out the Window

In the 90s, a chimpanzee tragically fell into a lake and drowned. While spectators watched helplessly, a brave truck driver leaped into action and risked his life to save the chimpanzee.

Believing in the importance of animal freedom, the narrator expresses a sentiment that animals like chimpanzees should not be confined for human entertainment. They should roam in vast natural habitats, unrestricted and happy.

Despite this opinion, the story highlights a remarkable video capturing a man defying rules to rescue a chimpanzee in distress.

Chased over the fence

In the year 1990, Chimpanzee Jo-Jo fell into a lake at the Detroit Zoo after being pursued by an aggressive chimpanzee, breaching the safety fence.

Everyone watched

Amid Jo-Jo’s struggle in the water, a group of spectators, including truck driver Rick Swope, witnessed the chimpanzee’s distress. While others stood by, Rick took decisive action to save Jo-Jo.

Jumped after a 60 kg ape

Despite the risks posed by the chimpanzees’ strength and the prohibition of human presence in their area, Rick bravely plunged into the water. Amidst the aggressive reactions of other chimpanzees, Rick fought against all odds to rescue Jo-Jo, an 18-year-old chimp weighing approximately 60 kg.

Jo-Jo was saved

Following a challenging rescue effort, Rick managed to pull Jo-Jo to safety, though the chimpanzee was in a weakened state. Despite the difficulties, Rick’s courageous act saved Jo-Jo’s life.

According to a report by Chicago Tribune, Rick shared his emotional connection with Jo-Jo after the rescue.
